The United States has a limited number of insurancecoverages for undocumented immigrants.
These individuals are not eligible to apply for health coverage through the ACA Marketplace, Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).Â
However, some states allow women to get prenatal care no matter whether they are citizens or not.
Employers may choose to sponsor some undocumented immigrants, but not to all. It’s possible that a spouse or dependent may also have access to health coverage through an employer-sponsored plan.Â
Insurance Options
Immigrants without documentation may be able to buy private health insurance through the Marketplace. The fact that subsidies cannot be applied to this coverage, however, results in high prices for this coverage.Â
In some states, student health programs offer resources to undocumented immigrants, while six states offer resources to children regardless of citizenship through state-only programs.
Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California) will cover low-income undocumented young adults starting in January 2020.
Affordable Health Coverage Options
Health insurance options for undocumented immigrants are limited.
Health centers in the community provide primary medical care to undocumented immigrants. Additionally, Title X clinics offer reproductive assistance and family planning.Â
Patients at Planned Parenthood health centers pay a sliding-scale fee based on their income, regardless of their immigration status.
 Emergency rooms in hospitals are required to treat patients in an emergency while screening and stabilizing them. Undocumented, uninsured, and undocumented alike can benefit from this system.
